McBee Cattle Company
McBeef Builder (Hybrid) Program

The commercial cattle industry has long been dependent on crossbred cows for the cow herd. The purpose of the crossbred cow herd is for ‘heterosis’, or hybrid vigor, which comes with crossbreeding and was discussed at the end of the Braunvieh section on this web page.

Documented research shows the use of two crossbred animals, or two hybrids, in a breeding program producing F2 calves to be as effective for maintaining hybrid vigor at the same level as that of F1 calves. This simply means that using hybrid bulls on a set of crossbred cows (or hybrid cows) will generally produce as much hybrid vigor as the crossing of two straight bred animals.

Hybrid vigor goes further than just increasing weaning weights. Research results show hybrid vigor to improve REPRODUCTION, CALF SURVIVAL, MATERNAL ABILITY and LONGEVITY. Research results from many stations show crossbred cows remaining in the herd 1.3 years longer and having 30% greater lifetime production than straight bred cows.

Following our goal of being a TOTAL BEEF PROGRAM PROVIDER, McBee
Cattle Company began our hybrid program with the best Angus genetics available and some of the best Braunvieh females we owned in order to develop our first McBeef Builder Hybrids. Further, many of our customers are repeat clients and had been using Braunvieh bulls on their crossbred cow herds for several years and now have cow herds made up of mostly 1/2 and 3/4 blood Braunvieh cows. For those customers to maintain the hybrid vigor they had experienced by using Braunvieh bulls on their crossbred cows, they had to use a bull of another breed or a McBeef Builder Hybrid. Almost all of our customers found the use of a McBeef Builder Hybrid bull on their Braunvieh cross cowherd the easiest and most desirable way to maintain hybrid vigor and increase production potential in their calves, both for replacements and sale.

Typical Braunvieh cow & F1 hybrid calf

Hybrid vigor is one of the easiest and cheapest ways that a beef producer can add to his bottom line. The proper use of hybrid vigor in a commercial cow herd can increase weaning weight between 10% and 20%. On today’s market, that is about $40 to $60 per calf.
